Shakespearean Passions: Festivals, Saint-Petersburg

The 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth is being celebrated in 2014, so it is no surprise that the subtitle of this year’s 24th “Baltiysky Dom” International Theatre Festival is “Shakespearean Passions”.

From 25 September to 13 October “Baltiysky Dom” will stage Shakespeare plays and productions based on the great bard’s works — close to him in dramatic force and theatricality, but developing the traditions of Shakespeare on the modern stage. The schedule includes productions by Oskaras Koršunovas and Eimuntas Nekrošius (Lithuania), Pippo Delbono and Romeo Castellucci (Italy), Kornél Mundruczó (Hungary) and others.

In its 24‑year history the festival has introduced many new directors to Russian and international audiences and this remains its central aim. Many of those directors have gone on to become acknowledged masters of world theatre.

One of them is Eimuntas Nekrošius: the premiere of his production “The Book of Job” will be one of the most eagerly awaited events in the festival. Another is Oskaras Koršunovas, who will stage two plays — Chekhov’s “The Seagull” and “Krapp’s Last Tape” by Samuel Beckett.

In his new production “The Orchid” the Italian actor and director Pippo Delbono has combined themes from Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and “Hamlet”, as well as other classical and contemporary texts.

The well-known Italian theatrical hoaxer Romeo Castellucci, one of the world’s leading directors, is coming to St. Petersburg for the first time. He will be staging his production “Julius Caesar. Excerpts”, based on Shakespeare’s play.

The sensation of the festival will be the first Chinese drama theatre to visit St. Petersburg. The Beijing People’s Art Theatre will be bringing Ren Ming’s production of “Our Jing Ke”, based on the work of the same name by the contemporary Chinese writer Mo Yan.
