An Ethno Marathon: Festivals, Saint-Petersburg

On 12 and 13 August the Music Museum in the Sheremetyev Palace is staging the “Musics of the World” ethnic festival for the second time.

The marathon weekend will bring the best ethno musicians from various regions of Russia and former Soviet republics to the Northern Capital. The festival’s participants do not simply maintain national traditions — they translate them into the language of modern music and perform traditional music with ethnorock and ethno-electronic elements.

The headliners of the festival are internationally recognized musicians: the Tigrahaud ethno-rock band from Kazakhstan, the brilliant Namgar group from Buryatia, the Yataghan acoustic quartet from Bashkortostan and the new “Alyona” ethno project featuring Alyona Romanova and musicians from the DDT group. Also performing at the festival will be the international ethno-electronic trio Uulzalga, which includes musicians from Buryatia and France. And that is by no means all: the surprises of the festival will be performances by the newest stars of the Russian ethno-rock and ethno-electronic scene.

The St. Petersburg Museum of Theatrical and Musical Art boasts one of the five largest collections of musical instruments in the world, and its ethnic instruments will take centre stage during the festival. The musicians will give several master-classes and artistic discussions, during which they will reveal the secrets of the traditional singing of various regions and will demonstrate the art of playing exotic instruments such as the morin khuur, the dombra, the kobyz, the saz, the qurai, the chanza, the yatage, the shur and the vargan.
