The 18th “Arts Square” International Winter Festival will take place from 14 to 24 December.

Founded by Yury Temirkanov in 1999, it encompasses all the cultural institutions around the square that gives the festival its name. The main events in the programme are in the Philharmonic Great and Chamber Halls.

This year’s festival opens on 14 December with a concert of works by Sergey Rachmaninov and Igor Stravinsky, the 135th anniversary of whose birth is being celebrated by the musical world. Maestro Yury Temirkanov conducts. The soloist is the outstanding pianist Evgeny Kissin. The sequel to Evgeny Kissin’s performance with the symphony orchestra at the opening of the festival will be the pianist’s solo concert on 18 December (Beethoven’s 29th Sonata and preludes by Rachmaninov).

One of the highlights of the festival will be maestro Temirkanov’s performance of Verdi’s Requiem on 19 December in the Philharmonic Great Hall. The Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Philharmonia and the Bolshoi Theatre Chorus will be joined by a brilliant quartet of soloists: Dinara Alieva (soprano), Olesya Petrova (mezzo-soprano), Francesco Meli (tenor) and Dmitry Beloselsky (bass).

On 20 December in the Philharmonic Great Hall the celebrated Israeli violinist Pinchas Zukerman and his trio will play chamber music by Chopin, Franck and Schubert.

The closing concert on 24 December will be devoted to the music of Rodion Shchedrin. A programme of his best compositions from various years will be performed by the Academic Symphony Orchestra under maestro Yury Temirkanov and Nikolay Alexeyev. The soloists are Alexander Buzlov (cello) and Olesya Petrova (mezzosoprano).
