A unique “Gallery of Costumes” has opened in the Hermitage’s “Staraya Derevnya” Restoration and Storage Centre.

The new gallery is the first, very important step towards the creation of a Hermitage centre for the study of textiles, costume and fashion. Models dressed in historical costumes are arranged in an area of about 700 square metres. In order that the fabrics keep their colour a constant temperature of 20 °С and a humidity of no more than 55% are maintained in the display cases.

The display includes costumes which belonged to members of the imperial family, from Peter I to Nicholas II — uniform dresses of Catherine II and military uniforms of Peter III, Alexander I, Nicholas I, Alexander II, Alexander III and Nicholas II, as well as examples of generals’ and officers’ uniforms from various Russian regiments of the 18th to 20th centuries. The highlight of the display is Peter I’s wardrobe. The collection is complemented by accessories: fans, hats, footwear and the travelling chests used to store and transport the items.

The “Gallery of Costume” can be visited only in guided tours, wh ich must be booked in advance by telephone: 340 1026 (Tuesday to Thursday from 10.30 am to 6 pm, Friday from 10.30 am to 5 pm). Passports are obligatory.
