A 20th Century Genius: Exhibitions, Saint-Petersburg

A major exhibition of the work of Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin opens in the Russian Museum’s Benois Wing on 25 May.

It is now clearer than ever that Petrov-Vodkin was a genius of the 20th century and his influence on the culture of his time was of comparable importance with that of artists such as Kazimir Malevich, Pavel Filonov and Wassily Kandinsky. The display in the Benois Wing will feature works from all periods of the artist’s career — some well-known, some forgotten — from various museums and private collections. For the first time works from the permanent displays of the Russian Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery will be accompanied by studies and sketches for them, enabling visitors to see plainly the process of the artist’s work. The public will see 250 works of painting and graphic art from different museums and private collections in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The works on display will include acknowledged masterpieces such as “The Bathing of the Red Horse”, “The Mother of God of Tenderness towards Evil Hearts”, “The Petrograd Madonna”, “Death of a Commissar” and “Alarm”.
