A Galaxy of Stars

This summer’s concerts in the 25th “Stars of White Nights” International Festival are worthy of the closest attention.

Until 23 July over 190 productions and concerts will be performed in the Mariinsky Theatre, Mariinsky-2 and the Mariinsky Concert Hall.

The operatic premiere of the festival is Isabelle Partiot-Pieri’s production of Francesco Cilea’s “Adriana Lecouvreur”, featuring Anna Netrebko, Vladislav Sulimsky and Yusif Eyvazov (Mariinsky-2, 21 June, 20 and 21 July). It is the first performance of this opera not only for Anna Netrebko but also for the Mariinsky Theatre and Valery Gergiev, who will conduct the premiere.

The wonderful voices of international opera stars will be heard at the festival. Among the invited guests is one of today’s most famous opera singers — Placido Domingo. He will appear with Ekaterina Semenchuk in “Macbeth”, singing the title role (2 Jul). Ferruccio Furlanetto will perform one of his signature roles, Don Quixote (28 June). Eva-Maria Westbroek will perform the role of Katerina Izmailova in “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” (29 June) and Albina Shagimuratova the part of the Swan Princess in “The Tale of Tsar Saltan” (15 July). A sparkling line-up of voices has been assembled for a concert performance of “Nabucco” to be conducted by Valery Gergiev on 25 June: Ekaterina Gubanova, Tatiana Serzhan, Sergey Skorokhodov and Roman Burdenko.

The ballet premieres are being staged by the young choreographers Ilya Zhivoy and Vladimir Varnava. Ilya Zhivoy will present “The Seasons” to music by Max Richter (based on Antonio Vivaldi’s cycle) at Mariinsky- 2 on 19 and 20 June, and Vladimir Varnava will show his interpretation of Boris Tishchenko’s “Yaroslavna”, the first performances of which will be conducted by Valery Gergiev, at Mariinsky-2 on 30 June, 1 and 2 July.

Besides the premieres, the festival programme includes the best ballets from the classical repertoire by 20th and 21st century choreographers: “Swan Lake”, “The Fountain of Bakhchisarai”, “The Nutcracker”, “Don Quixote”, “Giselle”, “Jewels”, “Le Corsaire”, “La Sylphide”, “La Bayadere”, “Cinderella” and “Park”.
